I have been drawing since I was old enough to hold a pencil. As a young girl, I fancied myself a sort of “Nancy Drew” of family history, and searched for clues from the past around my family’s former dairy farm in Central New York. I sketched our fields and woodlands, and photographed changing skies and seasons. I earned my Master’s degree in art from The State University of New York at Oswego. During my husband’s corporate career, we moved frequently, and I have used my interest in local history to connect to each new location and inspire my art.
Whether on a long trip or quick errand, I continue to use my camera for capturing fleeting images of old buildings, forgotten roads, or lonely railroad crossings. I am particularly inspired by early morning light on a brick house by a busy highway or evening shadows along a narrow road off the Interstate.
Back in my studio, I re-create the mood of these scenes using colored pencil on toned paper or oil and acrylic on canvas. My drawings evolve slowly with layers of countless pencil marks, while my paintings are done more loosely with bolder brushstrokes.
When I begin a new work, I focus on creating a quiet, questioning mood. As you view my drawings and paintings, I invite you contemplate the landscape – ever changing yet enduring – from my perspective.
